How to Get Out of Your Own Way to Be Happy

Are you enjoying your life and business?

Or are you feeling tired, frustrated, or drained?

You could just be going through the motions.

Most importantly, are you truly happy?

Maybe you are telling yourself, “I will be happy when I…

  • Enroll a certain number of clients.
  • Hit that number in my bank account.
  • Pay off debt.
  • Move into a better home.
  • Can finally take that vacation.

(Fill in the blank here. You get the picture.)

Just know that everything you want is because you believe having it will make you feel better.

But every time you reach your goal, happiness is fleeting, dissipating in moments.

So, if achieving your future desires does not make you happy in the long term, what is the point of it all?

Well, the truth is, you do not have to wait to be happy.

You can achieve joy right now.

It’s time to create a life and business you love today.

But how?

Decide

Before you begin, deciding that you are ready to be happy is essential.

It may seem counterintuitive, but being unhappy may be so familiar to you that it has become your emotional home. What would it be like if you felt more joy each day? How would it change your life or relationships?

Be honest. Are you willing to be happy? Do you think you deserve it? If not, what will it take for you to become ready?

Once you have decided that feeling good is for you, create the right environment for your alignment.

But, how do you know when you are aligned?

Imagine your inner state is a fuel gauge indicating whether you are in alignment.

When feeling positive emotions, your tank is full, while negative emotions show your tank is empty. You are out of balance with your internal state.

Be gentle with yourself and know that feeling unhappy is only an opportunity to make the necessary adjustments. If it does not feel good, change it.

If it is not a full-body yes, it is a good indicator that it is a no.

Step 1: Clear physical clutter (people, places, things)

Start by conducting an external audit of your physical environment. What feels heavy or creates stress and overwhelm? What can you eliminate to clear the space to thrive?

Evaluate the people, places, and things in your life. What fills you with energy, and what drains you?

People

Are the people you surround yourself with bringing you joy? Remember that you become the five people you spend the most time around. Are those people filling you with positive energy or draining you?

Do you have energy vampires in your life?

If you find that you are exhausted or unhappy after being with specific individuals, it’s time to revamp your circle. It may seem complicated; however, it is well worth it. Sometimes you have to say no to protect your time, space, and energy.

Spend time with people who fill your cup.

Places and experiences

How do you feel in your environment? Do certain places drain you while others fill you with joy? Do you feel smothered inside your office versus working in a coffee shop? Perhaps you prefer being surrounded by nature? Notice how your environment impacts you and adjust your setting to create more energy.

Keep all five senses in mind, including sights, sounds, smells, touch, and taste.

Perhaps certain smells are soothing, or certain sounds create peace.

Conversely, hearing low-grade noise or smelling scents that are not pleasing can be disruptive.

Eliminate negativity, including television noise (especially turbulent shows or the news), unpleasant smells, or social media notifications that can disrupt your well-being.

Spend time and create an environment that supports your happiness.

Things

Do you have piles of paper and drawers full of junk, or is the bottom of your closet buried in clothes? Perhaps your desktop, emails, and files are also a mess.

Remove clutter and any items that no longer serve you. Additionally, prioritize your time by first structuring your essential and enjoyable tasks while muting notifications or other external requests.

Step 2: Set up your mental state for success

You have the greatest opportunity to create a wonderful day when your mind is a clean slate and you are at your best.

When waking up, your creative brain is most attuned as you move into a relaxed, awake state that increases your joy.

Use this to your advantage by starting the day without distractions or phone time. Slowly stretch and practice gratitude by appreciating your great night’s rest, how comfortable you are, and how lucky you feel to be alive.

Set a positive intention for the day by visualizing a fantastic experience before responding to your environment.

Taking a nap or meditating later in the day can reset your mood while quieting your mind. As you close your eyes and get centered, your brain slips into an altered consciousness, a fertile ground for inner peace.

Step 3: Intentionally focus on feeling good

The past is past, and your future hasn’t happened yet, so all you have is the present moment.

Consciously and intentionally focusing on feeling good in each moment will create an overall positive life experience. Seek what is pleasing and what you can feel good around, and you shall find.

What can you focus on to create more happiness? How can you frame what you are doing to enjoy yourself?

Imagine your life as a play, with each moment as a different scene.

Example:
Scene 1: Wake up and stretch in bed
Scene 2: Be in the kitchen making coffee
Scene 3: Go for a walk outside
Scene 4: Take a shower
Scene 5: Meeting #1

Your life is a series of scenes that create your overall experience. Set an intention to appreciate and enjoy each moment in your play to the fullest.

And with each new segment, you have an opportunity to reboot your mindset, so ask:
What can you do to make this scene more enjoyable?
How can you make this more fun?

Appreciate all of the positive aspects of the five senses. What do you see, feel, taste, smell, or hear that you love?

Remember where you place your attention will have momentum and expand exponentially. Harnessing the power of your positive intention will create more joy in your life. Always be grateful and appreciate all that you have and are experiencing.

Step 4: Course correct if needed

Tap into your body and ask, does this feel good or not? And try not to beat yourself up if you feel upset.

Are you occasionally going to have an unpleasant moment or a bad day sometimes?

Yes.

That is normal and okay.

Remember, this is merely an opportunity to help you get back on track.

Focus on what you want

Pivot your focus from what you don’t want to what you want instead. The only way to remove negative thoughts is to replace them with a different idea.

Better thoughts will create new streams of consciousness, improved solutions, and more happiness.

Place your hand on your heart. Breathe in and..

Remember that knowing what you don’t want is there to help you to find what you do want.

Your setbacks are “set forwards,” opportunities to improve and move closer to what works for you. Accept the bad things that happen as a gift and trust in yourself and the universe.

And be gentle with yourself.

There is no need to focus on what is wrong, what went wrong or to concentrate on your negative feelings for too long.

After all, there is no point in dwelling on the past. Look to the future to find a solution.

Focus on what you want and where you want to go. Your problems are offering guidance on what is not working and creating the start of beautiful solutions. That is the path of least resistance.

How can you focus on what is working now and the solution?

Changing “I have to” to “I get to” can create a solution-oriented mindset. Shift your focus to possibility and don’t try too hard as “efforting” will get you nowhere.

Ask, what do you need right now to feel good?

How can you make this more enjoyable at this moment?

And if all else fails, meditate or take a nap to reboot your mindset and day so you can try again.
